දත්ත සමගින් දැනුවත්වෙමු – සවිමත්වෙමු

We chose 36 schools from some of the most disaster-prone districts in #SriLanka to participate in a quiz competition (දත්ත සමගින් දැනුවත්වෙමු – සවිමත්වෙමු) to enhance their knowledge on related topics.

Sarvodaya Fusion, UNDP Sri Lanka and Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources and Disaster Management are working on a common goal to educate Sri Lankans on the importance of Collecting and using Environmental and Disaster related (#EnD) Data.

After a number of successful events educating general public, media personnel, SMEs and many other stakeholders, it was time to educate school children on these topics to inculcate a culture among school children through creating awareness and capacity building to use biodiversity, climate change, land degradation and disaster risk reduction data when making decisions. The campaign aims at encouraging students to gain access to environmental related data on frequent basis, review them as a habit in their day to day decision making while educating their peers and family on any adverse impact it could bring in. Through this campaign it is expected to lay a foundation for the future generation to be mindful of preserving the environment and reduction of the disaster impacts saving lives and minimizing economic losses and infrastructure damages as a developing country.

The district round of the competition took part in 4 districts ( Matale / Gampaha / Rathnapura /Badulla) on 15th September 2018.

District winners :
Badulla – Badulla Central College
Gampaha – Vishakka Balika VIdyalaya

Microbit for Telecentre teachers

Microbit is a microprocessor introduced by BBC UK . It’s ease of use and online community support made it very popular in UK. Sarvodaya Fusion keeping in line with its mission just concluded the first ever Micro:bit Hackathon conducted in collaboration with Microsoft and micro:bit SLUG (Microbit Sri Lankan user group) recently to give a boost to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) educational initiatives in Sri Lanka. As it’s secondary step a workshop was organized for the teachers of grassroots Telecentres with the idea of enhancing the knowledge and exposure levels of rural students on latest technological advancements and know how.

It creates an equal platform for everyone alike as it provides opportunity while giving required digital access despite of social, geographical & economic barriers. Each Centre will be provided with a Micro:bit Kit free of charge by Sarvodaya-Fusion as an encouragement to exposing these grassroots Telecentres to latest technological devices and tools while engaging them in creating an innovative culture among their own student communities. This was organized as a one day workshop at the Hector Kobbakaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute on 6th of August
